• Great Question!

In Midlothian ISD, we inspire excellence today so our students can change the world tomorrow. Part of fulfilling this mission is providing an excellent education for our students and to give them the tools they will need to be competitive in the workplace.

In today’s classroom, access to technology is essential to every student’s success. That’s why we are launching the M*Powered 1:1 initiative in the fall of 2017. Details are provided below. If there are any unanswered questions, please email  info@misd.gs or call 972.775.8296.

Q: What devices will students receive?

    • All elementary students will receive iPads.
    • All secondary students will receive MacBooks.

Q: When will students receive their devices?

    • In the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.

Q: Will students be able to take the device home?

    • Yes. Students in good standing will be allowed to take devices home.  This will be a gradual transition as the 1:1 program begins.

Q: Do the devices have safety filters? What about apps?

    • Yes. Internet safety filters are installed on all devices, and they are in effect whether the device is being used on or off campus.
    • The MISD app kiosk provides access to learning apps and is available on the device.
    • The traditional app store and social media apps are not available on the device.

Q: As a parent, how can I get involved?

At Midlothian ISD, we believe our partnership with parents is vital to every student’s success. In fact, parent involvement is an important part of the M*Powered initiative, and we think it will encourage conversations about school at home. Please help us ensure your students success by:

    • Asking your child to show you the device and talk about their favorite assignments. Explore the device with your children to see what they’ve been learning.
    • Establishing screen time guidelines.
    • Charging devices at home so that your child is ready to learn when school starts.

Q: Can my student also use his/her own personal device?

Yes, however each MISD device is loaded with specialty software, applications and licensed resources that may not be loadable on a personal device. If your student chooses to Opt-out, these digital resources will not be available and could cause homework or assignment challenges. The student will have to work closely with their teacher to offset these challenges.

Q: What can I do to help my child keep up with learning this summer?

Take the time to spend time with your child, enroll him or her in fun, educational camps, and read together.

Come visit the A.H. Meadows Library, which is located in the Midlothian High School (923 S. 9th Street).

The library is a joint high school-city library funded by the City of Midlothian and the Midlothian ISD. There is a full-time librarian on site throughout the year. Here are the library hours:

    • Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
    • Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
    • Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

For more details, visit the library’s web site.

Q: What if I don’t have a good internet connection at home?

Reliable, high-speed internet is available at the Midlothian library. You and your entire family are welcome at the library! The community library hours are:

    • Monday - Thursday 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
    • Friday 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
    • Saturday 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

For more details, visit the library’s web site.

Additionally, many of the applications can be used without an Internet connection, so check the details of your students’ assignments to learn whether or not an Internet connection is needed to do the work.

Q: What do I need to do before my child can receive his or her device? Is there any cost involved?

    • There is an annual device protection fee listed below. Students receiving free and reduced lunches are charged reduced fees. Scholarships are available for students with financial needs and for families with multiple students. No family will pay more than $160 per year.  Families may meet with their campus principals regarding scholarships.

*students may also use their own personal backpacks that provide padded laptop protection

    • Fees can be paid during online registration (add link when available) or during schedule pickup.
    • Appropriate use policies included in handbooks and other required paperwork must also be completed before devices are distributed to students.

Q: How can I learn more?

We are committed to keeping our parents fully informed every step of the way. We have launched a Parent Video Series providing detailed information on the topics covered at the parent meetings. Please click HERE to view the videos, which provide detailed information about history of the M*Powered initiative and the research that went into the decision, along with perspectives from District leaders, teachers, students and area employers.

Much of this information was included in the parent meetings that were held in the spring to provide in-depth information about the M*Powered initiative.

We want to keep you in the loop! Please take a moment to visit the M*Powered website. If you have any unanswered questions, please email  info@misd.gs or call 972.775.8296.
