Board of Trustees Review the 1:1 Student Device Responsible Use Handbook and Approve the Fees Associated with the 1:1 M*Powered Initiative

Midlothian, TX, April 17, 2017 - The Midlothian ISD Board of Trustees reviews the 1:1 Student Device Responsible Use Handbook and Approves the Fees Associated with the 1:1 M*Powered Initiative.

On November 14, 2016, the Midlothian ISD Board approved the 1:1 M*POWERED Initiative presented by the Midlothian Technology Advisory Council (M*TAC) that will provide every student at Midlothian ISD with a technology device starting in the 2017-18 school year. Students grades PreK-5 will receive an iPad Air and students grades 6-12 will receive a MacBook Air.

Personalized learning is a learner-centered approach to education, with a focus on 21st century skills such as collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking, as well as a connection to individual interests and aspirations. Student devices, such as iPads and laptops, provide the opportunity to better engage students in the content when innovative practices are used to meet their diverse needs.  To help prepare for the transition to college and the  21st century workplace, learners must be active participants in relevant, engaging and real-world learning experiences that move beyond the traditional classroom.

The Student Device Responsible Use Handbook provides detailed information for parents and students regarding the deployment of devices, usage fees, care and storage of the device, loss or damage guidelines, and other operating procedures.

A non-refundable device usage fee must be paid before the device can be issued to the student.  The fee has been set as low as feasible and will be used to assist the district in covering costs not just associated with the device, but also repairs, peripherals, software, personnel, professional development and other facets to ensure this program is both successful and sustainable for MISD students. The fee schedule was approved as follows:

iPad usage fee per elementary student per year

Laptop usage fee per secondary student per year

$40

$80

$20 – Reduced lunch

$40 – Reduced lunch

$10 – Free lunch
