Midlothian ISD Adjusts Start and Stop Times for 2019 - 2020 School Year

Midlothian ISD Adjusts Start and Stop Times for 2019 - 2020 School Year

The Midlothian ISD School Board voted unanimously to adjust the start and stop times for the 2019 - 2020 school year. The new start and stop times allow the transportation department to operate more effectively and efficiently across the 113-square miles MISD serves, ensuring students are dropped off and picked up on time.

District leadership, along with elementary and secondary principals, has been discussing and studying the adjustment of our start and end times since October to manage increasing enrollment.

Critical considerations for the adjusted start and end times include:

  • Elementary bus pickup times remain the same - Elementary bus pick-up times in the morning will not change during the 2019-20 school year. For example, an elementary student whose bus stop pick up time is 7 a.m., will remain at 7 a.m.
  • Community growth - With an average student growth rate of 500 to 600 new students enrolling in MISD each year, the district adds an average of five routes annually to keep up with our community growth. With more subdivisions added across our 113-square miles and to maintain the current start times, the district would need to purchase eight new buses and hire eight drivers adding a recurring $1 million to the budget annually.
  • Shortage of bus drivers - across the metroplex and the state, there is a major shortage of bus drivers and MISD is unable to keep a full transportation staff. Currently, MISD bus drivers are working double shifts at both the elementary and secondary levels. Additionally, the transportation department has four unfilled bus driver positions.
  • More than half of elementary students arrive at school prior 7:25 a.m. - More than 55 percent of elementary students arrive at school prior to 7:25 a.m.  Currently, most elementary campus doors open to students each morning at 7:10 a.m.
  • High secondary participation rate in extracurricular and co-curricular activities -With the many co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities offered to our students, this year MISD has had 3,075 absences in sixth and seventh periods. Shifting to a later end time for secondary students is not a viable option at this time.
  • Ongoing evaluation - Each year, the MISD leadership, transportation team and principals review start and end times along with transportation needs to ensure the district is providing a safe and effective transportation system.

Due to these critical factors, the approved start and stop times are:

Elementary - 7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Middle and High School - 8:30 - 4 p.m.

MISD’s goal is to inspire excellence not only in the classroom but throughout all of its operations to best serve students, teachers, staff and community members.
